No. The online editor is not bad, however.
Is there any option in XTM to export the bilingual data in a [mostly] convenient format...?
Sometimes -- it depends on the way the client's XTM is set up. In some versions of XTM, you can export but not import. In other versions of XTM, you can't even export. In the versions where you can export and import, the format is XLIFF. So, simply ask your client if you can do the translation offline, in XLIFF format. If he doesn't specifically say "yes", then you know.

I recently came across some instances where agencies run XTM on some kind of boxed-in system that gives the translator no access to the file management aspects of it at all.

I think my biggest gripe with XTM is that in most (almost all) cases, the majority of segments start and end on a tag, and since you're not the one in charge of the file filter, you can't fix it so that unnecessary starting and ending tags are not displayed. A big fix in XTM would be a feature whereby a translator can type his translation without entering the starting and ending tag, and then the tags get added automatically when you move tot the next segment. But I can't see such a feature being added.

Thanks a lot for your response, Samuel.

[Is there] a desktop editor
No. The online editor is not bad, however.
To me "online" means "bad". Most likely using the mouse will be required. And of course you can't seriously compare the speed of executable file with that of browser scripts, Internet connection and SSD storage.
I recently came across some instances where agencies run XTM on some kind of boxed-in system that gives the translator no access to the file management aspects of it at all.
Most cloud tools allow access level setting. The problem is normally with the client. And with the developer, of course. Some are too much agency-oriented. Some don't even respond to freelancer's questions.

The main difference is whether the CAT is mostly translator-, or PM-, or CEO-friendly.

I have only few such segments appearing from time to time. When a segment is entirely bold or italic, there are no tgas in XTM editor. In my experience, such opening and closing tags only appear for some other reason (defferent font maybe). My concern is that I cannot find a way to use the Shift+F3 functionality (change lower case to capitals). Does anybody know if I miss somethiing?

I don't have an XTM job right now, so I can't check, but as far as I can remember, the answer is: no.

Hi XTM Support,

Could you please elaborate on the diefference between 'fuzzy repetition', 'fuzzy macth', and '100% repetition'.
I understend the fuzzy macth concept, but no idea about fuzzy repetition. How can a repetition be other than 100%?
Thank you.

From what I can see in the XTM user manual, and my experience with these terms in other CAT tools, a "fuzzy repetition" is nothing more than an internal fuzzy match. In other words, it's a sentence in the source files that is very similar to another sentence in the source files, regardless of whether there is a similar sentence in the TM. The XTM user manual appears to use the term "fuzzy match" for an external fuzzy match, i.e. a sentence in the TM that is very similar to a sentence in the source files. However, the XTM user manual does not use the terms consistently. In one place, for example, it refers to fuzzy repetitions as "document fuzzy matches". In one place it speaks of "exact matches" but elsewhere the same concept is referred to as "ICE matches", and what was normally called "100% matches" in most CAT tools are often called "leveraged 100% matches" in the XTM user manual. The term "100% repetition" does not occur in the XTM user manual, though I imagine it would simply refer to a repetition, i.e. a sentence in the source files that is identical to another sentence in the source files.

You mean that conventional 'fuzzy match' relies on TM, while 'internal fuzzy match' relies on other similar sentences within a documnet even if they are not in TM yet, don't you? If so, it seems clear now. Thank you Samuel.
I have 2 pdf manuals, but none of them mention the 'fuzzy repetition' term.

(However I would still appreciate any sort of confirmation from XTM team, if they happen to come across this thread.)

I have been using XTM for quite a while and have to say I enjoy using it. At the same time, I do use other products (the usual suspects; trados etc.) so sometimes I need to remember which tool im using while working or else I can get frustrated like some of you have mentioned. Overall its a good tool IF you're not completely used to another tool!

Post title: Surprising behaviour of XTM Cloud: Change segment status

When I finish correcting a file, that not all segments are marked as Finished (green). Normally I simply use the feature "Change Segment Status" on all Segments.
However as for the first time, I decided to do a last check before completing the work. I decided to view which of the in-scope segments have a Non-Green status using the filter excluding specific statuses "Green", I was surprised by a few segments with "green-red-red" status.
This should not be the expected behaviour within XTM, is it? Thanks for advising!

Working offline - memoQ vs Trados?

Hello,

A number of my clients assign projects in XTM (I use their license, and I do not have my own).
I prefer to work offline using CAT tool.

For memoQ, if vendor just download as .xlf, TM which are shown below each segment in XTM are shown in "Comment" in memoQ and no need to download TM as .tmx (in fact, there is nothing in .tmx).

However, for Trados, if the vendor download .xlf file, where in Trados the TM will be shown? Is using Trados + XTM not convenient so much compared to using memoQ + XTM?

I use memoQ only so I do not know how it looks in Trados but one of my colleagues who is Trados user is eager to know, so I decided to ask here.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I also use the XLIFF files from XTM, and I have Trados, but I don't know the answer to your question. I asked about it, here:

I personally use OmegaT (with the Okapi filter plugin) to process the XTM XLIFF files, and I can confirm that OmegaT shows the alt-trans translations among the other fuzzy matches. OmegaT automatically extracts all the alt-trans translations to a separate TM, with the user ID "FromAlternate!", so if it does turn out that Trados doesn't show these matches, you could open the XLIFF file in a temporary OmegaT project, grab the autogenerated "alt" TMX from it, and import it into a Trados TM. I do use OmegaT but I can't *recommend* it because I don't use it in the usual way.

Samuel,

I do remember you when I posted question about XTM I or M segments can't be edited in memoQ!
Thanks so much for helping me again. I shall let my colleague know about OmegaT option but also follow the thread you kindly posted on Trados forum.
I can honestly say memoQ is better than Trados because many of my clients assign me projects in XTM.

How to add terminology when exporting file to xBench

Hello,
We are trying to use to a better extent the export to xBench functionality.
Most of the features work well, but there is an area that it doesn't which is the terminology.
I could not find a way to add the term-base of the project to the xBench checklist.
Has anyone manage to solve this?
thank you

Until XTM's support people answer, in the mean time, can you export a TM and do that TM's TUs contain modification time stamps?

Wow, was it really that tragic? I never heard anybody talking about a CAT tool in such dramatic way!
I am using XTM Editor for the first time and bumped onto this post dated back to 2011.

I wonder whether our expectations with online/cloud CAT tools have changed and everybody would find that a refresh time of 5-10 seconds between segments is really inacceptable?

(Personally, I would consider it totally unacceptable that, today in 2020, it took longer than 1 second to change segment, or 2-3 seconds to change page/file.)

Post title: Worst CAT tool I've ever worked with

A customer of ours recently switched from using Memsource (a decent enough online CAT tool) to XTM.

Our productivity immediately plummeted. We find XTM to be slow, buggy, and utterly lacking the features one would expect from a professional tool (for most of our client we work using either memoQ or Studio).

I've been using CAT tools for over twenty-five years (I was one of the very first users of DV, back in the early '90s), and I've never seen a worse tool than XTM.

I imagine it must be cheaper than competing tools for translation companies, because I cannot otherwise explain why they are adopting it:

Cons:
- Terrible interface
- Buggy
- Slow
- Lacking most of the features that a professional CAT tool should contain

Pros:
"free" for translators (who, however, will not be able to use their own translation memories, and will generally not be able to download a bilingual file for work using their own CAT tool)

Hi,

I have two huge files (54k words) to review and I have downloaded two .xlf files from XTM Cloud so that I can review them using SDL Studio 2017.

Does anyone know what happens with the tracked changes? Will they be transferred to XTM?

Thanks
