I doubt that the tracked edits will be transferred. As far as I know, XTM Cloud can't import SDLXLIFF files, but only it's own XLF file format. This means you're going to have to open the XLF file in Trados (which will convert it to SDLXLIFF), edit it, and then export it back to an XLF file in the end. The XLIFF standard does not have a standardised way of containing tracked edits. The SDLXLIFF format's method of tracking changes is not standard in all XLIFF files but is unique to SDLXLIFF.

[i]If you open an SDLXLIFF file with tracked changes in MemoQ, MemoQ will recognise the tracks and will apply those edits to the MemoQ XLIFF file, but that is a special case, because the SDLXLIFF file is the "source" file, whereas in your scenario the XTM XLIFF file is the source flle and the SDLXLIFF file is the intermediary file.[/i]

I just imported back one of them to see what happens (while the Track Changes was still on - visible edits). Nothing happens. None of the edits are imported.

I'll accept one them and try to import it again and see if the changed seg appears in XTM.

I was looking to post my opinion under the same title ... but I found it was taken!
Working for over 20 years with CAT tools, using almost all CATs available on market, I also believe XTM i by far the worst one.

Apart from what you already mentioned, it kicks user out after 5 or 10 minutes of inactivity for security reasons.
So avoid thinking too much on what you are about to translate, just do it and go next segment :roll:

There is more than one version of XTM, and these versions have different features. Which version you're working on, depends on your client. Basically, if the version you're working on loads about 60 segments at a time, and then dynamically loads new segments when you move to the bottom, or to the top, then you've unlucky enough to be using the new version. If you can view 100 segments at a time and easily jump to specific "pages" of segments, then you're in luck: it's the older, better version.

I always refer to XTM as 'a sub-optimal' tool compared to 'the industry standard tools' for precisely the same reasons that Riccardo and Nicolae state. Just one point to be aware of: XTM does indeed have functionality to export xlf (and tmx) to allow translators to work in their preferred 'industry standard tool' BUT, whether or not the function is available depends on the agency. Perhaps that's the reason why Riccardo says it is 'generally' not possible? I work for two US based agencies who both use XTM, one allows me to download the material and use SDL Trados or MemoQ, which are my favorites, but the other doesn't allow this. Let's hope this tool will soon be a thing of the past.

By the way isn't Lionbridge's Logoport thing both dead and buried? I thought it was, but perhaps it's just that I am in the lucky situation not to have clients using that surely even worse tool.

I am using Trados Studio 2015. I have an XTM project that I would like to work on offline. I have downloaded all the files and TM. My issue is that all the segments with fuzzy matches from the online files becomes translated in my file in Trados. These obviously needs to be checked as they are clearly incorrect.
Where can I find this option to not populate the target text with "incorrectly translated" fuzzy matches? It says that this feature is disabled by default, but that cannot be the case for me. I really hope that someone still reads this post, because it is getting old...

Dear Kjersti,

thank you for your post. I am Product Manager at XTM and would like to get back to you. And no worries, we monitor Proz and will get back to you any time you need help or want to share any feedback on our product.
Regarding your question, the setting controlling which TM matches should automatically populate the segments can be accessed only by the XTM Admin user of the XTM instance your project comes from. If you are only a linguist (translator, corrector roles, etc.) and have no access to the XTM configuration, you have to reach out to the Project Manager/anyone on your client side.

Just for you to know, the client can find this option under Configuration > Settings > Translation > TM tab > 'Fuzzy matches' section - Populate target with...
The option needs to be set to 'Never' in all fuzzy categories and this is the default setting in XTM.
This would apply to both online and offline translation.

I would like to check anyways if, in your case, the target segments are populated AND confirmed as well in Trados. The fact that you see fuzzy matches in the target segments in Trados could just be because the matches are actually coming from the .tmx file you have connected to your project. That's why you would see them, but in this case, they would not be confirmed (Trados segment status would be 'Draft' for fuzzy matches coming from the tmx file, and 'Translated' for the matches that were automatically or manually confirmed in XTM before generating the .xlf file).

So I would advise you to check with your client the System settings, but also to double-check if in Trados those matches are just coming from the .tmx and not the .xlf file itself.

As for the user manual, the most up to date version (12.3) can be downloaded either from the XTM UI (under the ? icon) or from our website [url removed]
I can confirm that fuzzy repeats belong to the internal fuzzy match categories in XTM. While the standard fuzzy matches refer to the matches coming from the TM. Please refer to the XTM manual, page 294.

If I understand correctly, the option is available only to the client. The translator has no access to it.

I have a pair of scripts that takes the XTM XLIFF file and attempts to either blank out or mark up the fuzzy translations in the XLIFF file.

Updated: I added a readme file to the scripts (same zip file), and the scripts work for me. But of course, I have only have limited XTM XLIFF files to test it on.

Hi Samuel,
thank you for your question and apologies for my late reply.
'leveraged-inherited' (or 100% repetition, as we called it) just refers to an internal repetition, hence two (or more) identical segments in the project files.

Note that only the repeated segment(s) would have the state qualifier 'leveraged-inherited' and not the first occurrence of that segment.

In particular, to go back to your example, this is what happens:

Case 1: if there are e.g. two identical segments that both have a fuzzy match in the TM
- First segment has state-qualifier="fuzzy-match" [followed by match-quality="xx%" and the information about the original project where the fuzzy is coming from, with the original source and target match of that fuzzy]
- Second/repeated segment (and any following repetition) has

Case 2: if there are e.g. two identical segments that both have no match in the TM
- First segment has no state qualifier, because it is unmatched
- Second/repeated segment (and any following repetition) has

We have 3 users in-house and all are having the same issue. We are using Mac and Chrome. When translating big DITA file, which has more than 600 segments for example, Workbench stops working; can't submit translation, no concordance, can't move to the next file, etc. You need to re-open Workbench each time. (I could reproduce the same issue on Windows 8 with Chrome on Parallels and native Windows 7 with Chrome in a short test. I don't know if it happens same frequency as on Mac)

I opened a support ticket for this but it seems hard for them to reproduce the issue. You have to be a translator to see the issue, I guess.

So I want to ask you all to help the support! Have you seen the issue?

Hi Armine,

thank you for sharing your feedback. Interoperability is very important to us so can you please write to [email removed] and outline what the actual problem in your case is?
Usually issues are caused by:
- changing segmentation in Trados (or any other CAT Tool)
- wrong inline elements (tags)
- saving file as sdlxliff and not xliff (in Trados, use Save as -> xlf, instead of saving directly the file, as Trados auto-coverts it to sdlxliff)
- if the Project Manager on your client's side has reanalysed the project while you were translating, this would change the project ID included in the xlf file, so once you try to upload yours, the IDs no longer match.

If the error message in XTM is not helping you finding the root cause, I encourage you to write to Support. We always actively work on finding a solution quickly for you.

1. XTM distinguishes between the two versions of the editor by calling the old one "XTM Editor" (i.e. version 11 and older) and the new one "XTM Workbench" (version 12 and newer), and both will continue to be available for some time.

2. XTM Workbench has two features that are better than XTM Editor, namely the ability to resize the browser window and the ability to view more than one file simultaneously.

3. It also has two features that make it worse, namely having moved the match information further away from the segment (now in a separate pane at the bottom of the screen) and cumbersome and unpredictable pagination.

[u]Separate match pane[/u]

The video's narrator says that moving the match information further away from the active segment "doesn't clutter up your screen".

In reality, (a) it now takes up precious vertical space permanently instead of temporarily; (b) the match information and the current segment are no longer both within a single field of vision, which means that 1. your eyes have to move/focus between two or three points on the screen continuously and 2. you now have to memorize more text in order to do things like compare matches. I'm not saying the way it works in XTM Editor is better, but it has productivity advantages that are now lost in XTM Workbench.

On the other hand, subsequent segments are no longer shifted downwards to make room for the match information, which some will find visually pleasing.

[u]New pagination model[/u]

The video's narrator believes that XTM Workbench's new scrolling pagination model of much better than XTM Editor's hard pagination model, but in reality it is simply different. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages.

In XTM Editor, there are e.g. 100 segments on the screen (which is a "page"), and you can move quickly and predictably to other pages. However, you can never view more than one page at a time, e.g. if you want to see the bottom 20 segments of page 1 along with the top 20 segments of page 2 (if e.g. they form a logical unit in the source file).

In XTM Workbench, there are e.g. 100 segments on the screen, but if you move all the way to the top or bottom segment, and then move one more time, it loads an additional 35 segments at that point (and removes 35 segments at the other end of the screen), which is great for keeping stuff together even if they span across page boundaries. However, there are no longer buttons for moving to other "pages", and instead, if you want to move to other pages you have to take note of the current segment number, mentally calculate the other page's top segment number by adding 35 segments x number of pages, and type that number into the in the go-to box.

A simple solution to this mental calculation would be to add buttons or a dropdown list for pages in increments of 25 segments.

Can you give us some examples of things from the new version (and preferably also the old version) that you feel are "flaws"? Do you dislike all browser-based CAT tools or do you find XTM Workbench specifically bad?
